Opportunities for Funding and Management of Outdoor Recreation Resources in Chelan and Douglas Counties
Access to open spaces, parks, and outdoor recreation is increasingly important to the quality of life in north central Washington. This access not only enhances the region's vitality by fostering growth and development, but also plays a crucial role in our local economy by attracting visitors drawn to its scenic beauty and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Increased participation rates in outdoor recreation activities are leading to heavier use of existing sanctioned and unsanctioned recreation resources.
There is widespread recognition of the economic impact of outdoor recreation in our region. Despite this awareness, investments in expanding the capacity to operate and maintain existing resources, as well as in developing new recreation-focused capital improvements, have not matched the increasing demand for outdoor recreation nor the potential economic benefits that could be realized from this demand.
This report highlights gaps in the current levels of service for outdoor recreation management. It also identifies numerous opportunities to secure additional funding dedicated to developing and managing recreation resources. Furthermore, the report offers recommendations on strategies that stakeholders in our region can pursue to increase funding and improve management practices. Suggested next steps include further quantifying the benefits of outdoor recreation, identifying the beneficiaries, and mapping out the most suitable funding sources for the land and recreation managers who provide and maintain the outdoor recreation resources critical to our local economy.
